December's tsunami rearranged the beach restaurant scene a bit - but Surin Beach was the king of the hill before the tsunami - and remains so now. Some shops will go - new ones will come.
Surin Beach - as of last night (Jan 31, '05) had 20+ restaurants! If you can't find something you like - you just aren't trying! Twin Brothers is the photo to the left here.
The north End of Kamala Beach (as well as the main part of town) - had a great number of beach restaurants prior to the tsunami of '05. It'll take a while to rebuild, but it is worth checking out next time you are on the island.

Bang Tao Beach restaurants
These restaurants are half the reason I live on Phuket. What can
be better than a wonderful meal at bargain prices with the sea lapping
at your heels? The beautiful scene above is just down the street from my house!
What more can you ask from life. Phuket!
Kamala, Surin, Bang Tao, and Nai Yang beaches
are the true center for these type beaches. The numbers and names
change regularly - but all three beaches are worth traveling to - if you
love discovering great new places to eat.

cool: this restaurant isn't on Bang Tao Beach anymore - but I found two of
their signs as driftwood (long before the tsunami) - I love beachcombing!
