Squeaky Sand on Phuket's
Naithon Beach:
Nai Thon is a classic small beach
village, a favorite of local residents on Phuket
A favorite of those who live on the northern part of Phuket, Nai
Thon beach is known for its clean and pure "squeaky sand".
As you walk the beach here
you'll hear it.
Nai Thon is slowly
developing and is not as well known as some of the
southern beaches. But, it's well worth the drive. All along
the coast road there, opposite the beach are some very nice, locally
developed bungalows and resorts. A few large developments are coming,
but it will still be several years before Nai Thon loses its wonderful small village
feeling.
Small, new restaurants open
regularly, all with Thai favorites on the menu. The northern end of
the beach sports some rocky outcroppings that the 2004 tsunami made even
more spectacular and are reputed to be some of the best snorkeling on
the island.
Check the maps page for
the location of Nai Thon, it is between Nai Yang Beach to the north, and
Layan and Bang Tao Beaches to the south. There are several small Nai
Thon Beaches south of the village area - some called Nai Thon Noi (little
Nai Thon). If you follow the coastal road south you will see several
spots where you can climb down the steep embankment to the beaches.
People sometimes take long tail boats to this area. Very private,
almost unknown on the island.
The small resorts along this strip are usually quite
reasonably priced and well worth a stay if you enjoy the quieter, less
crowded location, I do!
