Phuket's People to Know
The author of this website is in the photo to the right. My wife and I first came to Phuket in 1993 on a vacation - and we promptly fell in love with the place. We've had a home here since 2002. We've traveled a lot, I've been to 22+ countries since 1989, and it just felt so comfortable on Phuket that it seemed like the perfect place to live and eventually retire. I only live on Phuket five months per year right now - but do keep my home here. Seven months per year I teach at a university in Korea. The major reason is that it is hard to save significant money when you work on Phuket, or in Thailand. That's true at least if you are an English teacher, as I am. Here on Phuket you can earn enough to live well - but if you need or wish to put aside savings for retirement - you might consider working elsewhere for a few years and then returning. Before coming to Phuket I taught English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in Korea, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, and in Bangkok (as well as here on Phuket). When I taught on Phuket I was a teacher trainer for Text-and-Talk. I have/had taught EFL teachers before and since that time - both times in Korea (1993-94 and 2003-05). I've been an EFL teacher (a major career change) since 1992. I only learned about the EFL occupation when I was a Peace Corps Volunteer managing a textile manufacturing company - Martothodi Pty (Ltd) in Francistown Botswana (Africa). Had I known of EFL as a career prior to that time - I would have started in 1976 when I finished my first master's degree! Blah blah blah - enough about me!
